Testing older drivers is long overdue, many say - Taunton Daily Gazette

Older and teen drivers have the highest rates of involvement in fatal crashes. One gets whacked at insurance time, the other gets a break – a 25 percent break.

Teen drivers pay more for auto insurance because of their lack of experience behind the wheel.

At the same time, Massachusetts has a law mandating that drivers over 65 get a 25 percent discount on their auto insurance bills.

The rates aren’t reflective of the risk, said Loretta Worters, vice president of the Insurance Information Institute, an industry analysis group.

One point insurance group makes: Older drivers are more likely to die in car accidents than younger ones.

The group supports regulations to keep impaired drivers off the road – like a bill proposed by Milton Sen. Brian Joyce.

Older drivers have higher rates of fatal crashes, based on miles driven, than any other group except young drivers, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
