Working class heroes Wicked Local Norfolk (blog)

Mike Barnacle, erstwhile hero of the ordinary guys of the world, was on MSNBC with Joe Scarborough this morning, whining about the tax hikes written into the health care reform legislation, which begin to kick in at $200,000 income for an individual, $250,000 for a married couple filing jointly.

That’s not rich, Barnacle said, echoing comments I’ve heard here and elsewhere. If you’ve got two earners in the family, you own a nice home, you live in Massachusetts and you’ve got a couple of kids in college, that’s just getting by.

If he didn’t play a reporter on TV, Barnacle could be forgiven his ignorance. Most everyone likes to consider themselves middle class (except for the Donald Trump-types who revel in their elite status) and, given humans’ tendency to increase their spending to match their income, most people feel they are just getting by.

But let’s be real. According to this chart (2007 numbers, source unclear), just 3.17 percent of U.S. households earn. more than $150,000. According to the Census, The mean household income for the highest quintile for 2008 was $171,057; the mean for the top 5 percent was $294,709. I’m still looking to see where exactly $250,000 in income falls, but I’m guessing it’s north of the 95th percentile. In Mass., the Census reports, the median household income is $64,814.
