The federal laws of the United States have given the individual states the right to impose regulations to which the citizens have to follow. Such rules are specified with the best interest of the citizen in mind. Among the many other rules, the laws pertaining to insurance have been of prime importance.
The state of Maryland is a No fault state. But it also imposes a restriction with the need to be covered by a Personal Injury Protection (PIP). In case of a no fault state, in the event of an accident, the individuals involved will be covered by their individual insurance covers. However, the state of Maryland with this dual philosophy requires that the individuals be also covered by a PIP insurance. This was, in the event of an accident, if the injured intends to, he can sue the person responsible for the accident.
Also, a minimum Bodily Injury Liability limit is fixed at $20,000 per injured person and up to $50,000 per accident to cover for all the people travelling in the vehicle at the time of the accident, and Property Damage Liability coverage is fixed at a minimum of $15,000. Such a minimum limit is generally called the 20-50-15 cover. It is also advised to the citizen that they do not restrict their insurance covers to the minimum limits specified by the state and rather go for a higher insurance amount so that they can be covered for their expenses in the event of an accident of higher proportions.
Though not absolutely essential, you can even opt for an uninsured motorist insurance. This insurance will help in the event of an accident involving an uninsured motorist. If you are not covered by such an insurance, you are required to pay for the damages caused to the other person, which in some cases can run into a huge amount.
Apart from the uninsured motorist insurance, one can also opt for a collision insurance and or even a comprehensive insurance. A collision insurance covers you for an accident involving a stationary objects such as a parked automobile etc. A comprehensive insurance on the other hand covers for any damage caused to your vehicle as a result of some natural causes such as the occurrence of floods, earthquakes etc.
