Decision delayed on Warminster car parking charges Warminster People

The Council had sent an amended proposal to Warminster  suggesting that they should pay £36,000 as a contribution for some free spaces in one of the car parks, which would make the spaces free for one hour.  For details of the original proposals see http://www.warminsterpeople.co.uk/news/Free-Parking-end-Warminster-s-central-car-park/article-1948760-detail/article.html

Around forty members of the public attended this evening’s meeting and traders from the town and shoppers spoke about the need to keep free parking in order for  businesses to survive.  Val Langley from Town Pets in the Market Place was applauded when she presented Warminster Mayor, Cllr Tony Nicklin, with a petition which contained 4,000 signatures against parking charges.

Several traders in the town spoke up against the charges.  Chris Croker from Stationery Plus in the Cornmarket said his customers come into town for one or two purchases and would be deterred by parking charges.  Isabel Buckingham suggested that people who work in the town should be able to buy a parking season ticket at a reduced rate.  Others spoke on behalf of shoppers from outlying villages who use the town, the need to encourage more visitors to the town and how charity volunteers who give their time to help in the town will be penalised by parking charges.
