New State Farm app aimed at young drivers Bloomington Pantagraph
BLOOMINGTON -- State Farm's second iPhone application -- this one aimed at young drivers eyeing a discount on car insurance -- has been downloaded more than 9,000 times since its launch last month.
The Steer Clear Mobile application uses videos, self-assessments and "trip logs" to engage drivers under age 25. They can download the safe-driving program to their iPhone or iTouch, so long as they don't use it while actually driving.
The "app" is now one of three ways young drivers save up to 15 percent on their insurance premium using the Bloomington-based insurer's Steer Clear discount program.
Blake Giles, a business analyst on State Farm's mobile team, said the app's developers recognized that some young drivers may not feel comfortable admitting to their parents they need help with driving.
"We thought we'd take this as an opportunity to take a device we know teens use ... and provide some (information) that will hopefully convince them to come to State Farm," he said.
